West Nile Virus Detected

HEALTH ALERT: West Nile Virus Detected in LA County

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been detected locally in nearby Winnetka and Sylmar. LA County health officials confirmed the first West Nile virus death of 2026, involving a San Fernando Valley resident. Roughly half of the county's documented human infections this season are concentrated in the Valley. Because there is no human vaccine for West Nile virus, taking proactive measures to protect yourself and your family is essential.

What You Need to Know:

  • Onset: Symptoms typically appear within 5 to 15 days after a bite.
  • Mild/Moderate Symptoms: Fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or a skin rash.
  • Severe Symptoms: High fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, paralysis, or worse.

2 Key Ways to Protect Yourself Today:

  1. Wear Insect Repellent: Apply EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus when outdoors.
  2. Utilize Free Vector Control Services: Take advantage of the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD). Their expert educational tools and inspection resources are already funded by your local taxes—use them to keep your property mosquito-free!

Action Step: Dump out any standing water around your home (flowerpots, birdbaths, pet dishes) at least once a week to break the mosquito breeding cycle.
