... and the proposed 131-unit "no parking" project.
Earlier this month I introduced a motion in Council to fund detailed analyses of a proposed apartment building on Acama Street in Studio City.
The proposed project replaces 18 existing apartments with 131 very low- to moderate-income apartments and no on-site parking. Given the width of the street, this raises enormous concerns about traffic, emergency access, and competition for already scarce on-street parking. I've requested additional signage for the adjacent Preferred Parking District, but signage alone will not resolve these issues.
I strongly support increasing our supply of affordable housing, but this is just poor planning. I've spoken with the Planning Department and the developers about these issues, but under State law, affordable housing projects like this one can bypass the local approval process. Because the City has to offer incentives to meet the State mandate, we cannot impose parking requirements or other conditions on projects that qualify under State law.
Although these limitations restrict the City’s ability to stop or significantly modify the Project, they do not prevent us from carefully evaluating its potential impacts on your street and neighborhood. The analyses I've requested will be included in the project’s administrative record. I will continue to work with community members and our City agencies to mitigate impacts arising from this project.
